The home has a significant impact on the happiness of Finns
According to the housing foundation Happiness at Home According to the study, the home has the greatest influence on the happiness of Finns, along with health and relationships. According to a recent study, the general happiness of Finns is decreasing and the feelings experienced at home have changed. National Home Day is celebrated on Saturday, October 8 – the importance of the home is highlighted in difficult times.
In the Housing Foundation’s Happiness at Home survey, the happiness of Finns and the importance of home was investigated for the second time. According to the results, home is directly connected to happiness. Home was ranked as the second most important source of happiness, right after health. The importance of health has decreased slightly since last year as the coronavirus pandemic subsided.
The barometer measuring general happiness is still high, as almost three out of four respondents say they are satisfied with their lives. However, compared to last year’s Happiness at Home survey, the happiness of Finns is decreasing.
The feelings of peace, happiness and joy are felt most at home. Compared to last year, positive emotions are felt a little less and feelings of anxiety, depression and insecurity have become more common. The experience of loneliness has also increased.
“The research shows that events in the world also affect Finnish homes. Home is an irreplaceably important safe haven in uncertain times,” says Johanna OtranenDirector of Communications and Marketing, Asuntosäätiö.
A sense of community increases the experience of happiness
Although a clear majority of Finns (71%) report that they enjoy themselves best alone or with their family, the Happiness at Home survey shows that communities are an important source of happiness.
According to the research, community members are clearly happier than average. Happiness is increased by all kinds of communities, from the neighborhood to hobby groups, sports clubs and ideological organizations.
National Home Day invites you to spend time at home on Saturday 8 October
National Home Day is celebrated in Finland on Saturday, October 8.
“According to the Happiness at Home survey, Saturday is Finns’ favorite day. We also typically spend the most time at home on Saturdays. The importance of the home in life is undeniable, which is why it deserves its own holiday. Home Day is easily celebrated by staying at home – to enjoy the peace or to have a coffee with a neighbor. You can share your party on social media with the hashtag #kodinpäivä”, says Johanna Otranen.
In Asuntosäätiö’s Happiness at Home survey, the sources of happiness in Finland and especially the role of the home were investigated for the second time. 1,068 respondents who represent Finns between the ages of 18 and 69 took part in the Happiness at Home survey conducted in August 2022.
