In Salzburg, 30 percent of the people are not allowed to go to the federal presidential election on Sunday, even though they are over 16. You do not have Austrian citizenship and therefore do not have the right to vote. The “pass-any-choice” is intended to show how these people would vote.
This “choice” was founded by SOS fellow human beings and is organized in Salzburg by the “Many” association. The ballot paper is similar to that used for Sunday’s election, and voting is also carried out in secret. A number of foreign nationals living in Salzburg visited the polling station on Tuesday – for example from Romania, Syria, Afghanistan or the Philippines.
Some of these are people who live in Austria but do not want to take Austrian citizenship because they originally had to return their passport. Others would die Austrian citizenship Would like to, but do not yet meet all the requirements for it.
Interest in the “election” relatively low
Gabriele Rechberger from the “Many” association regrets that the interest in trying to vote is relatively low. By Tuesday noon, around 80 people had voted. “Most people probably think that the incumbent Federal President will be re-elected anyway. And they consider the other candidates to be too little known or not politically attractive enough,” says Rechberger.
Nevertheless, everyone who is over 16 and does not have Austrian citizenship was allowed to come to this “election” in the “Many” association in the city of Salzburg until Tuesday evening. The votes are to be counted late Tuesday evening and then presented together in Vienna. However, it does not officially count for the presidential election on Sunday.
