Iran protests: women burn headscarves – salzburg.ORF.at
timeline
On Sunday afternoon, men and women from Iran, Austria and Bavaria demonstrated at Salzburg’s main train station against Islamic tyranny and the compulsory wearing of headscarves and hijabs in Iran.
Despite the rain, around 350 people attended the rally on Sunday. There were also numerous Iranian women who live in exile in Europe and talked about their experiences at home.
Hair cut too
“Mullah has to go!” and “Woman-freedom-live!” was shouted, for example. As a sign of solidarity, some women also burned headscarves. Because in Iran, women always have to wear them in public. In addition, some people in Salzburg cut their hair for the demo, according to the participants, also a sign of protest against the centuries-long oppression in the Southwest Asian state.
The politically independent organizers also want to support the “protests in Iran for freedom, equality and justice” in Austria, as it was said. The initiative came from an Iranian-Austrian circle of friends in Salzburg. There were also representatives of clubs and politicians from Salzburg who took part in the rally.
Uprising in Iran for freedom
The reason for the protests in Iran is the violent death of a young woman who was arrested by the Islamic moral police because of her clothing. According to Amnesty International, 52 people were recently killed in anti-government demonstrations in the country.
Again nationwide protests
In Iran, protests continued in several parts of the country on Saturday. Thousands of demonstrators blocked the main roads in the capital Tehran and chanted slogans against the political leadership of the Islamic Republic.
