Historical qualification of Portugal to the round of 16 — DNOTICIAS.PT
This Monday, Portugal achieved a historic 3-2 victory against the powerful Romania team and secured qualification for the round of 16 of the World Team Championship, which happens for the first time in the history of the women’s table.
The team had two victories in Chengdu, against Sweden and Romania (6th), both by 3-2, and lost against China Taipei, by 0-3.
Athlete Fu Yu (17th in the world ranking), based in Madeira for many years, was once again the highlight of the team, with two victories, with the triumph being guaranteed by Shao Jieni (53rd).
Shao Jieni started by beating Elizabete Samara (37th) by 3-2, followed by Fu Yu, who defeated Bernadette Szocs (31st) by 3-1.
With a 2-0 lead, a national representation took the charge of Inês Matos (289th), who could not overcome Adina Diaconu (72nd). Shao Jieni also lost against Bernadette Szocs, with the match being tied (2-2). In the final game that they put face to face, and Elizabete Samara, to the best Portuguese game, took the best team, Fum, the clearance of the front.
The men’s has also secured first place in the group and qualification for the round of 16, with two wins in two games, against Brazil (3-2) and Slovakia (3-1).
In the other group games, Slovakia beat Denmark (3-1) and Brazil beat Denmark (3-1). Portugal will also play with Denmark, this Tuesday, from 03:00 (time in mainland Portugal).
