Champions Hockey League: Red Bull Salzburg can secure promotion at the CHL summit
© Sports report
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the four Champions Hockey League participants in the win2day ICE Hockey League will be in the penultimate Group stage required. EC Red Bull Salzburg could already secure promotion to the knockout phase in Group E on Wednesday. The EC iDM heat pumps VSV denies the first of two promotion showdowns against the Straubing Tigers on Tuesday. For Hydro Fehérvár AV19 and HK SZ Olimpija Ljubljana, the round of 16 is already out of reach.
CHL Showdown Part 1 for VSV on Tuesday
The EC iDM heat pumps VSV started on Tuesday with three points in the last CHL doubles group phase against the Straubing Tigers. The DEL team won three of their four games in the Champions Hockey League, putting them in second place in the table. In the league, however, the Lower Bavarians had a mixed start to the season: the Tigers had to leave the ice as losers in four of seven games and are currently in eleventh place in the DEL table. The Villacher Adler have not yet been able to take off in the league and have only won two of their five games. Only one of the four games so far has been won in the CHL, but the chances of promotion are still intact. But only if the Villachers get all three points on Tuesday does the chance of reaching the round of 16 live on. If the Eagles succeed, there would – in all probability – be a “real” showdown in Straubing a week later.
Also on Tuesday Hydro Fehérvár AV 19 will play their penultimate game of the current CHL campaign. Even before the doubles match against GTS Katowice (4th and 11th November), the round of 16 is out of reach. Nevertheless, the Hungarian team from the win2day ICE Hockey League will claim its first CHL victory in Poland on Tuesday.
Salzburg can fix round of 16 on Wednesday
EC Red Bull Salzburg has the best chances of promotion of all ICE teams. The leader of the win2day ICE Hockey League has seven points before his last double in Group F of the Champions Hockey League. Only Fribourg-Gottéron is better placed in the group with nine points. But the Swiss club, of all people, is not far behind Salzburg’s two-time opponent at the end of the group stage and third and fourth-placed Lauern in the group. Before the last two matches, all four teams in Group F still have the opportunity to advance. Salzburg could already be in the round of 16 after Wednesday’s home game against Fribourg-Gottéron. Salzburg would have to make at least two points more than the Stavanger Oilers at Ilves Tampere.
The wildcard participant in the Champions Hockey League, HK SZ Olimpija, has no chance of reaching the round of 16. The first Slovenian CHL participant is still without points in the current campaign. Changing the scenario against the EV train will be anything but easy, as they only had to give up a single point in the previous four CHL games.
