The return to school in September 2022 was not, for the Market in the Saint-Paul district a Caen (Calvados), each Saturday morning around the church, up to the hopes placed in him by the members of the association of inhabitants of the “village Saint-Paul”. Born in February 2021, this weekly meeting which exclusively offers organic products however, seems to have found its audience.
But the attendance ended up falling on this market which still brought together six traders, Saturday 1uh October, encouraging the organizers to “take a one-month break to revitalize it”, as explained by Maggy, Arnaud and Jean-François, members of the neighborhood association.
Why pause the market for a month?
The market has run out of steam. A very popular market gardener died last April, and since the drop in attendance. We also lost food trucks. And since the start of the school year, the producers present are worried because the customers are fewer than before. We have exchanged it with the professionals, it is obviously a general observation on all the markets. We have therefore decided to suspend the activity of the Saint-Paul market in October, to work behind the scenes to reboost it.
What are you going to do during this time?
Two things basically. The first, contact producers in the organic sector (market gardeners, cheese makers, breeders…), as well as artisan bakers, ceramists, sellers of dry products… We would also like to find someone who offers pancakes every Saturday.
Also, we will communicate with the inhabitants of the neighborhood and probably beyond, to invite them to come and meet us from Saturday, November 5th.
What makes this market special?
The idea is to offer only or almost only organic products. Also, it is distinguished by its conviviality, deployed in the heart of a very residential area. We are working to promote it even more. For example, every first Saturday of the month, a table will be laid out with a free coffee, in order to encourage meetings and exchanges between the inhabitants of the sector, as well as with those who come from further afield.
