VILLENEUVE-LEZ-AVIGNON Medal-winning athletes honored by the City
For two years, because of covid-19, the municipality of Villeneuve-lez-Avignon had not been able to organize its medal ceremony for the athletes of the city. The elected officials caught up on this Wednesday, September 27 by highlighting the excellent results of those who have performed at national or even international level.
A dozen athletes are awarded a trophy. Within the ASVA (Villeneuve Athlétisme sports association), Cherif Maghlout, the general coach, and Julien Murgia, the technical director, were congratulated. Pascale Bories, the mayor, retraces their journey: “ They distinguished themselves during the French masters championships which took place last June in Châteauroux. Out of 1,000 athletes gathered, Chérif won the title of French long jump champion with a leap of 5.45m. He will also represent the country at the world championships to be held in Poland next March. As for Julien, congratulations for his bronze medal obtained in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16’05 seconds. »
Two other trophies were awarded to Baptiste Levert and Eulalie Clech, both members of ASV swimming (Association sportive Villeneuve). He is a schoolboy at Sancta Maria and won two medals at the French youth championships organized in Pau. He became vice-champion of France in the 800 meter freestyle and 1,500 meter freestyle. She is educated at the Jean-Vilar high school in the new “swimmers-studies” class and distinguished herself in Amiens during the French open summer championships by becoming vice-champion of France junior in the 1,500 meters.
Rain of medals at the judo club villeneuvois
On the side of the Villeneuve judo club, the titles have also been linked this year. Mathis Dufraigne became, last March, champion of France in the minimal category in less than 42 kilos. With Antoine Bottariga, they also won the title of vice-champions of France by department team. Kaïs Guettari walked the international tatami mats and won silver at the European Cadet Championships in less than 50 kilos, which took place in Croatia. In the process, she won gold in Strasbourg and was selected with the French team for the world championship in Sarajevo.
Clara Mermet finished 3rd in the Youth Olympic Games, second in the French Championship, 3rd in the European Cup Cadet… She was replaced as number 1 in the World Championship with the France team. The town of Villeneuve also made a point of honoring two judokas who arrived from Ukraine, Ivan Chernyshenko and Danyil Zoubko, who wore the club’s colors internationally. Pascale Bories rewarded her thanks to the volunteers who make these sports associations exist and also congratulated Alain Sanciaume, elected to sports and president of the RCAGR (Rugby club Les Angles Gard rhodanien) who is starting his season well in Federal 2, with a faultless in the first three games.
