Reyðarfjörður one disaster zone
There has been extensive damage to residential buildings and vehicles in Reyðarfjörður. Car damage has been widespread, car windows and windows have been broken and roof damage is extensive, especially in industrial buildings.
Ragnar Sigurðsson, town councilor in Reyðarfjörður, made a trip out to take pictures and investigate the situation. He started driving and felt the car pick up a lot of wind. People have therefore been directed to stay indoors while the weather passes, and it is therefore the first responders who are on the way.
“It’s terrible weather here, one of the towers of the war museum collapsed, there’s been a lot of damage to the Byko ski resort in the city center. There is also extensive damage to Mjóeyrharf and the fire station. The same applies to Eimskip’s premises.”
He says containers flying around town. “It can be said that here is an absolute disaster area at the moment. I have never experienced anything like it. The whole bushes are bred.”
No regular work day ahead
The wind comes violently in waves, but Ragnar doesn’t think there’s any indication that it’s going to die down until later this evening. The weather warnings will remain in effect until the afternoon tomorrow.
The Public Safety Committee will meet afterwards and a decision will be made as to whether school will continue tomorrow. As far as the working life is concerned, Ragnar thinks it’s clear that there won’t be a normal working day for people tomorrow, as it will probably be necessary to take action in many places.
“We’ll finally see the full extent of it when it’s over, but there’s been a lot of damage here.”
