A constitutional right to food is to be introduced in the canton of Geneva. The cantonal parliament adopted a corresponding draft law on Friday evening with 52 yes to 43 no votes. Since he wants to change the constitution, the population will have to vote on it.
In the spring of 2020, during the economic crisis resulting from the Coronoa pandemic, long queues of people are waiting for food deliveries. These have shown how important it is to include this right in the list of fundamental rights alongside the right to housing. This was explained by SP Councilor Diego Esteban in the sense of the council majority.
The planned new constitutional article states that “the right to food is guaranteed. Every person has the right to the food he has earned and to be protected from hunger». The left and center supported the text. They believed that the state should support local, healthy and high-quality food.
Other parties reject the text. SVP Councilor André Pfeffer described the template as “spongy and difficult to implement”. “This right will become an obligation,” said François Baertschi of the right-wing populist party Mouvement citoyens genevois (MCG).
