Holiday travel back to pre-crisis level – oesterreich.ORF.at
In the first half of 2019, the number of vacation trips was 9.76 million. In the months of January to March, the travel activity of Austrians is still below the level before the coronavirus pandemic (3.53 million vacation trips in 2022 compared to 4.11 million in 2019), but increased significantly in the second quarter. In the months of April to June, the number of holiday trips in Germany rose by 10.4 percent to 6.23 million and was thus higher than in 2019 (5.65 million).
The Austrians were drawn more abroad again this year. Almost half (46.9 percent or 4.58 million) of holiday trips in the first half of 2022 go abroad. In the first half of last year, it was just under every fourth vacation trip. According to Statistics Austria, the distribution of domestic and international trips is again largely the same as in the first half of 2019.
Italy, Germany and Croatia most popular destinations
The goals achieved today were Italy, Germany and Croatia. Long-distance travel was also more popular than last year, but with a share of 6 percent it was still below the pre-crisis level (9.8 percent).
The number of domestic holiday trips increased by 59.6 percent to 5.19 million trips compared to the same period of the previous year, but was also slightly (4.5 percent) below the level of the first half of 2019 (5.43 million ).
Car as the number one means of travel
The most popular means of travel today was your own car. More than half (61.9 percent) of holiday trips in the first half of the year in this country were made with a private car, for trips within Germany than abroad. However, more trains were used this year, around 17.1 percent of holiday trips in Germany and abroad were made by train.
This proportion has not only increased compared to the same period of the previous year (11.7 percent), but also compared to the first half of 2019 (12.4 percent). At 29.3 percent, the proportion of air travel abroad in the first half of 2022 was still below the level of 2019 (37.6 percent).
The number of sales in the first six months of 2022 also increased compared to the same period of the previous year (to 1.71 million), but was still around ten percent below the pre-crisis level in 2019 with 1.9 million activities.
