Fendi plays y2k minimalism
The first heavyweight to parade for Milan Fashion Week, Fendi opened the ball on Wednesday with a minimalist collection drawing inspiration from the work carried out by Karl Lagerfeld for the Italian house between 1996 and 2002.
Designed by Kim Jones, the collection alternates between muted hues and a palette of bright colors made of icy brown, steel blue, absinthe green and tea rose. On the silhouette side, we note low-waisted cargo pants embellished with straps and sometimes combined with overskirts and overdresses, tailoring pieces but also a lot of vagueness. The materials are in turn satiny, often fluid, sometimes compact and comforting.
Y2K and 90s trends infuse the SS23 collection through tank tops, vinyl wedges, minimalist cuts and sheer materials. A nod to the Fendi archives: the line takes up an old floral print and a logo first introduced in 2000.
“What interests me particularly at Fendi is to explore the notion of functional utility alongside femininity”, explains Kim Jones in a press release, adding that “at Fendi, [il] always think about practicality as well as luxury”.
