After Riga demanded that it will not issue humanitarian visas to Russians avoiding mobilization, Lithuania says that it will evaluate each case individually.
In a comment to BNS on Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) stated that Vilnius does not have the purpose and ability to issue visas on humanitarian grounds to all passing Russian citizens.
This also requires inspections related to national security issues. Requests addressed to the Russian capital will continue to be assessed in a poor order, taking into account all nationalities and individually, in order to avoid threats to Lithuania’s national security and to keep the door open to the persecuted public and representatives of the opposition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicates.
The Ministry also states that Lithuania will continue to consult with regional partners and at the European Union (EU) level regarding the response.
Almost eight months into the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a partial mobilization in the country on Tuesday.
According to him, the West is allegedly trying to divide and destroy Russia, and Kyiv is planning hostilities on Russian territory.
Responding to such demands, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgaras Rinkeviius, stated on his Twitter account that Riga will not issue humanitarian visas to Russians avoiding mobilization.
For security reasons, Latvia will not issue humanitarian or other visas to Russian citizens who are avoiding mobilization, and will not change the border crossing restrictions for Russian citizens with engine visas from September 19.
The head of Latvian diplomacy also stated that his party will consult with allies and partners regarding the joint action related to the mobilization initiated by Russia.
On Monday, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Poland began to apply stricter controls on Russian citizenship, allowing only Russians who meet certain criteria through the EU’s external borders: diplomats, dissidents, employees of transfer companies, EU citizens, holders of residence permits or long-term national visas. , Russians go to and from the Kaliningrad region by train through Lithuania.
