Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalliová on a visit to Slovakia
On September 21 and 22, 2022, Helena Dalliová, the European Commissioner for Equality, will visit Slovakia.
During the first day of her visit, Helena Dalliová visited some regions of Slovakia, where she will discuss issues of equality during her meetings, especially regarding the Roma community. He will meet the mayor of the city Sečovce and with local residents in a segregated Roma settlement You suck, which uses several EU-funded national projects. He subsequently visited school in Kecerovcewhere all the children are in primary and kindergarten of Roma.
“Two years ago, we adopted the EU’s strategic framework for the equality, inclusion and participation of Roma. We have set interesting goals for 2030, for example that by this year at least 60% of Roma have paid employment. Another of the goals is to reduce the segregation of Roma in schools so that less than one in five Roma children attend schools where most or all of the children are Roma. During my visit to Slovakia, I will discuss directly with the Roma and the people who work with them, with the aim of achieving sustainable change. I would like to see progress towards a Europe where Roma can truly participate in society and have the opportunity to fully contribute to and benefit from political, social and economic life.” said commissioner Helena Dalliová in connection with her visit to Slovakia.
The commissioner will also meet with non-governmental organizations, which help Roma integrate into society: he visited the Whirlpool Corporation, which introduced an employment program for the training and qualification of employees with low education and no established work skills. The following day, Helena Dalliová visited the social enterprise Wasco, which employs people from disadvantaged backgrounds, especially Roma women.
Issues of equality, especially the equality of the Roma, their inclusion and participation in society will also be the subject of the commissioner’s meeting with Prime Minister Eduard Heger. The commissioner will be with the prime minister, including on the issue of violence against women, the Istanbul Convention and of the Commission’s proposal for a directive on combating violence against women. Meetings with the chairmen of the parliamentary committees for social affairs, European affairs and human rights and minorities are also on the agenda.
