Chabad Berlin builds new synagogue in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf
Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal had a surprising novelty ready for the Jewish New Year in Berlin on Wednesday: he announced that the Chabad community wants to build a new synagogue. Teichtal, in the presence of Bundestag President Bärbel Bas, Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, the express ambassador Ron Prosor and the President of the Berlin House of Representatives, Dennis Buchner, that “the new, large synagogue of the community should be a house that is open to everyone”. Details are not yet known, but construction is expected to begin soon.
Teichtal arranges a reception for the Jewish New Year, saying it is a great sign that Judaism has arrived in Germany and Berlin and that it is always evolving. He that just a few years ago it would have been unthinkable that Jewish refugees from Ukraine would find a safe haven in Germany. The Chabad community had taken in a hundred Jewish children from Odessa after the Russian attack.
New ambassador Ron Prosor said Rabbi Teichtal was an outstanding representative of the Jewish community in Berlin and recognized the rabbi’s services. The ambassador said that German and reliable virtues complemented each other excellently. He said: “The Israelis are teaching the Germans how to fly, and the Germans are showing the Israelis how to land.” Prosor wants to improve German-Israeli youth exchanges.
The New Year was opened with the traditional blowing of the shofar.
