a carpooling app that drives in Monaco
The application, which expected nearly 4,000 subscribers at the end of August, is proving to be an effective solution in the face of the unprecedented rise in fuel prices, but also in view of the climate emergency.
Klaxit presents itself as the French leader in home-to-work carpooling. The application, introduced two years ago in the Principality, under the joint management of the Department of Digital Services, the Mission for Energy Transition and the Department of Forecasting, Urban Planning and Mobility, allows passengers to travel for free and drivers to receive a small fee (from €1.5 to €3 per passenger, depending on the distance travelled).
What by convincing more than one, especially at a time when prices at the pump are soaring, and when the climate emergency is more and more glaring. The numbers speak for themselves. The first year, about 1,000 trips per month were made, while we are at 2,000 per week in recent months. Unsurprisingly, Nice is the most mentioned departure point and destination (42% in total), followed closely by Italy.

The development of carpooling also benefits companies, and in particular the 35 project partners such as the CHPG, the SBM and the Cardio-Thoracic Center of Monaco (CCM). “Carpooling reduces stress and allows workers to socialize with other employees of the company and/or the Principality, which is interesting after a pandemic”notes a representative of the CCM.
Objective: to find the circulation of the 1990s
The Government, too, is there. When we know that a third of the Principality’s greenhouse gas emissions come from mobility, we understand better why the Executive is working so hard to reduce the number of cars on Monegasque territory. Any journey made on the application and having Monaco as its origin or destination is subsidized, which represents an investment for the state of more than €300,000 since the launch.
As you will have understood, travel and mobility are at the heart of the Government’s action, which has also set itself the goal of reducing traffic, by 2030, by around 20% compared to 2019 light vehicle flows. Achieving this objective could thus result in traffic equivalent to that of the 1990s.
We are on the right track with Klaxit, even if some improvements remain to be considered, in particular to solve the difficulties of connections with the Bouygues Télécom, Free and Orange networks, which “do not limit themselves to the antennas of Monaco Telecom”. Pending an agreement between Monaco Telecom and these operators, do not hesitate to use the free Wi-Fi available in Monaco, near bus stops for example.
