Brussels wants to secure supply chains by putting pressure on companies
Berlin/Brussels, Sep 19 – The federal government has backed EU plans to give Brussels more rights to intervene to secure supply chains in emergencies. The Ministry of Economics, led by the Greens, announced on Monday in Berlin that the government welcomed the proposal to allow free movement of goods and services in the EU internal market in the event of a probable crisis. The European Union must improve its crisis preparedness. The corresponding EU regulation will now be analyzed in detail.
Companies based in Europe are likely to be expected from a draft by the EU Commission to prioritize the manufacture of certain products or to have more in stock. The plans come in response to disrupted supply chains in critical areas both in the coronavirus pandemic and since the Russian attack on Ukraine that has sparked an energy crisis. The proposals are likely to meet with opposition from business and some EU countries. Critics complain that the Brussels authority is going too far and intervening too much in companies.
