The destruction of granaries in Ukraine is considered a war crime of the Russian Federation
Documented data on the destruction of granaries by the Russians in Ukraine are considered by the US government and international organizations as revealed war crimes of the Russian Federation with the aim of holding the Russian Federation accountable and imposing new sanctions.
This was reported to Ukrinform by the executive director of the Yale Humanitarian Laboratory, Nathaniel Raymond, one of the leaders of the Conflict Observatory project to collect data on crimes committed by Russians.
“The information (collected by the Conflict Observatory – ed.) is useful for the efforts of relevant structures in the US government and in our world, which are considering sanctions and accountability measures (Russia – ed.), both in the short term and in the long term,” he noted Raymond in response to the agency’s questions.
According to him, regardless of whether his Ukrainian grain infrastructure facilities were damaged intentionally or through indiscriminate shelling, attacks on them, according to the Fourth Geneva Convention and the Rome Statute of 1998, could constitute a war crime and a crime against humanity.
“The evidence that we have collected has received these negative crimes,” the scientist emphasized.
In addition, according to him, the data on the destruction of granaries in Ukraine is also useful for the World Food Program, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and other specialized structures in order to reduce the consequences for global food security.
As reported by Ukrinform, the Conflict Observatory project, which supports the US government, found that since the beginning of the invasion of the Russian Federation, Ukraine has lost a sixth of its grain storage, or 15.73% of the total amount. This list includes silos, elevators, grain bunkers and warehouses for wheat, barley and sunflower.
