Miss Côte d’Azur godmother of an operation against pediatric cancers this Saturday in Monaco: “I myself was a victim of this disease when I was little”
Bachelor at 16, third-year medical student in Nice, beauty queen elected Miss Côte d’Azur last August and contender for the crown of Miss France, the Niçoise Flavy Barla has, at first sight, everything for her. But as often the varnish hides flaws, scars and suffering.
Flavy, who reveals that he was a victim of cancer in his childhood, agreed to be the sponsor of the Trott’N’Roll of the Flavien Foundation, this Saturday in Monaco, to support sick children and their loved ones.
Is this your first charity operation since wearing the Miss Côte d’Azur scarf?
Yes, this is the first. In fact, she was the first to contact me. Of course, if I can broaden all of that, I will, but first of all I’m sticking with the Flavien Foundation because it means a lot to me.
Did you know the Foundation before being elected?
By name, but I absolutely did not expect to become a godmother. If only in relation to my first name, it seemed obvious to me, and it immediately touched me. I’m in my 3rd year of medicine and I know how important this kind of foundation is to get things done, because we don’t always have the funds.
“I can understand, like my parents, how important it is to have support”
This role of godmother also allows you to exchange with researchers and doctors…
Yes it is a huge wealth for me. I like to remind you that this title of Miss Côte d’Azur is not at all to put myself forward but to make exceptional and super enriching encounters.
The fight of Denis Maccario (president and founder of the Flavien Foundation) touches us all because cancer tarnishes the daily life of every family. Is this fight against the disease a sensitive subject for you?
Yes, it is extremely important because I myself was a victim of this disease when I was young. I can understand, like my parents, how important it is to have support and to feel supported in this kind of ordeal.
You were?
Moral support is essential. My parents were surrounded enough but what we can do today is very different from what we could do in my time. After I was quite young and do not realize the impact that it can have for the family and the entourage. But when we are told a few years later, we say to ourselves that we would never have wanted to be alone at that time. It’s important to know that there are people like us, who are going through or have gone through the same thing.
