Conclusion of the archaeological inspection at the site of Poggio Castellano (San Marino)
From 5 to 15 September 2022 a check was carried out on the state of conservation of the remains of the portion of the protohistoric housing structure of the site of Poggio Castellano (San Marino).
The State Museums-Archaeological Section, explain in a press release Cultural Institutes of the Republic of San Marino, was conducted in 1997 in Poggio Castellano, under the scientific direction of prof. Gianluca Bottazzi, an emergency archaeological excavation in the area of a construction site, bringing to light the remains of a portion of the housing structure.
The bottom of the hut has the upstream side dug into the slope soil, while downstream it was characterized by a foundation level made of pebbles and stones bound by clay, cut by building breakthroughs.
The structure, partly excavated in 1997 and partly preserved in place and reinterred, can be dated to the final Bronze Age (XI-X century BC), a period in which the presence of a settlement is also attested on Monte Titano, in the Second Tower area.
The emergency excavation returned ceramic materials and made it possible to reconstruct the economy of the time by studying the bone remains of animals and analyzing pollen samples.
The findings of the excavation were presented in an exhibition and a publication and the finds are now on display at the State Museum.
25 years after the discovery and excavation, the remains of the bottom of the hut of Poggio Castellano were in a good state of conservation and did not require conservation interventions.
It is also possible to update the documentation on the structure, using the new relevant technologies in use today.
The control of the state of conservation of the portion of the residential structure of Poggio Castellano was initiated by the Cultural Institutes-Archaeological Section in agreement with the Autonomous State Authority for public works (Construction Sector and Public Green Sector).
The control intervention, coordinated by the Archaeological Section, was conducted by the executive archeology company adArte Srl of Rimini under the scientific direction of prof. Gianluca Bottazzi and with the advice of the restorer Dr. Antonella Pomicetti.
In order to guarantee its conservation, it has been reinterred in order to guarantee its conservation.
