Brussels wants better protection of smartphones and doorbells against hackers | Tech
According to Brussels, the extra security is badly needed. Cyber criminals increasingly strike with, for example, ransomware and cause many billions in damage. The European Commission that consumers should not be expected to expect such attacks.
The European Commission also states that they should be more open about the security risks of their devices. Before they bring their equipment to the market, but also afterwards, they have to continuously assess the risks.
In the first five years a product has been launched, the first security vulnerabilities and other issues must be reported within 24 hours. Then they also have to come up with solutions.
According to Brussels, the proposal does not only help consumers. It is also going to damage a lot of money and results itself, because cyber attacks are less likely to succeed.
If companies stick to the proposed rules, nothing in the EU countries can keep their products off the market. The regulators can impose fines that can amount to millions of euros.
The proposal is now before the European Parliament for approval.
