Toulouse: MP Nupes sleeps in a tent with migrants from the Allées Jules-Guesde camp
François Piquemal, MP for Haute-Garonne (Nupes), spent the night of Monday, September 12 in the camp for isolated migrants, on the Jules-Guesde alleys. A way to challenge the institutions on the situation of these young people
“These are not conditions in which one can live. Some sleep on the floor because they don’t have a mattress” says the deputy of Haute-Garonne François Piquemal (Nupes), after spending the night in the Allées Jules-Guesde camp, where a hundred migrants are installed, since August 26. For the time being, no accommodation solution has been offered to these young people, and the discussions seem to be at a standstill. “I asked the prefect, I questioned the For the moment, only the county council has agreed to sit around the negotiating table,” explains the deputy.

Faced with the most precarious living conditions, the situation is becoming alarming. “The streetlights are on all night until 7 am. Young people also have to sleep with the constant noise of cars. I invite politicians to come, like me, for a whole night. They will then tell us whether or not it is acceptable to sleep in these conditions,” he said.

“No matter their age, they must be relocated”
“The question of minority is incidental in this story” Even if the associations guarantee that 90% of the migrants in the camp are minors, the age of these young people is often questioned. For François Piquemal, everyone, regardless of their age, must be relocated. “The question of the minority is incidental to this story. No one should sleep on the street. The majority, the minority, it is up to the institutions to discuss it and to know who supports whom. retorts François Piquemal. According to him, we should take the example of the town hall of Lyon and open three different places, to welcome migrants in their situation.
“Minors will be taken care of by the county council, migrants who have recourse to the court to find out whether they are minors or adults, can be accommodated in another place, and adults in a third” explains François Piquemal. “Otherwise, we will dismantle the camp and it will move elsewhere. In the end, we will not have solved the problem,” he laments.
