Portugal with 46.8% renewable incorporation in electricity in August, 5th in Europe – Observer
The incorporation of renewables in electricity was 46.8% in Augustminus 10.4% compared to the same maintenance month in 2021, if Portugal is the fifth European country with the highest incorporation in Europe, according to APREN.
According to the Renewable Electricity Bulletin, published by the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN), “between August 1 and 31, 2022, additional incorporation was 46.8%, totaling 3,169 GW [Gigawatt/hora] with production “to increase by 10.4% compared to August 2021, the hydraulicity index must be increased, which resulted in a sharp decrease in hydraulicity”.

In the accumulated up to August, 2 GWh of electricity were generated in Mainland Portugal, of which 822 renewable incorporation54.6% were from renewable sources, keeping Portugal as “the fourth European with the largest in electricity generation”, behind Norway , Austria and Denmark, which obtained quotas of 99.3%, 80.5% and 77.2%, respectively.
According to REN, in the accumulated period of January, the AP electricity sector from January to August a total of 1.1, COCO2eq (tons of carbon dioxide measurements), with the equivalent electricity sector avoiding the emission, 0 Mt eq. and 758 million euros spent on offsetting natural gas.
In the same period, an average hourly price was recorded on the Iberian Electricity Market (Mibel) in Portugal of 192 euros/MWh (Megawatt/hour), which “represents a more than triple increase compared to the same period last year”.
APREN’s analysis points out that “from June 15th, when the Iberian mechanism to limit the price of natural gas came into operation, until August 31st, it generated savings of 54.5 euros/MWhc, which was equivalent to August 31, a 16.5% reduction in the average hourly price on MIBEL”.
“Savings due to the cap on the price of natural gas, corresponding to the difference between the price without the mechanism and the price with compensation to be paid to natural gas plants, reached a maximum value of 134.7 euros/MWhc and a minimum of 5.62 euros/MWhc”, he details.
In total — he adds — 34.6 of the 67.8 TWh (Terawatt hour) were subject to the consumer adjustment mechanism in the Iberian Peninsula.
