The Gironde has once again been plagued by flames since Monday, September 12, when the department was marked this summer by dramatic giant fires.
The forest fire which broke out on Tuesday afternoon near Bordeaux covered more than 400 hectares on Monday evening according to the latest information this morning. The fire is located near Saumos, west of the Gironde capital.
300 firefighters battled the flames all night. A thunderstorm, which did not bring much precipitation, did not help the firefighters much.
The village of Saumos evacuated
Large resources were dispatched to the scene to try to circumscribe the blaze as quickly as possible. Around 5:30 p.m., the firefighters decided to evacuate the village of Saumos. The 540 inhabitants were directed to neighboring municipalities. According to Sud-Ouest, the track of three distinct fire starts would be preferred.
The fire broke out in a context of exceptional heat in the department for the month of September. This Monday, September 12, it was up to 38 degrees in Bordeaux.
