L’ISAE-SUPAERO wants to find a solution to reduce aircraft noise on the ground and in flight. To do this, the Higher Institute of Aeronautics and Space in Toulouse is working, in collaboration with theONERA.
Materials to eliminate or even eliminate noise
This research work on aircraft noise reduction is carried out using a complex mathematical formula. This allows researchers to model the propagation of sound within aircraft.
After detecting the frequency band on which it is located, the noise emitted by the device could be drastically reduced thanks to the installation of “micro-perforated liners or porous materials lining the entrance walls of the reactor nacelle.
ISAE-SUPAERO and ONERA have already continued their research. Next step: modeling the noise reduction of aircraft nacelles through the use of porous materials.
“To understand: a noise is made up of several sound frequencies. For acoustic linings to be effective, it is therefore important to locate the frequency band in which the noise is located and to analyze the frequencies to be reached. Porous materials are to date the effective insulators to suppress sounds on all frequencies of a noise and are therefore particularly suitable for the aeronautical sector. This thesis should soon be completed (December 6, 2022) and aims to support manufacturers and airline companies in their turn towards sound ecology.”
Noise, a health scourge
If ISAE-SUPAERO is investing in this issue, it is because the stakes are enormous. According to the Institute, “the noise is the 2e factor causing the most health damage in Europe”.
The Airport Nuisance Control Authority (ACNUSA) takes this pollution seriously and does not hesitate to sanction companies that violate the air decibel limit. In 2021 alone, airline companies suffered 6.5 million euros fine for acts of noise pollution produced by their activities within the perimeter of airports.
