Toulouse Academy: the boom in professional sectors and the enthusiasm for apprenticeship
The Toulouse academy has recorded a spectacular increase in candidates for professional courses that the government wishes to reform. Locally, the workforce has increased by 30%.
Match business needs with vocational education. This is the new reform brought by the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron, on July 14, who also wants to see the stages increase by 50% and better remunerate them.
The enthusiasm of students for technological and especially professional courses continues to be measured over the back to school season. In the Toulouse academy, there is a surge of candidates for apprenticeship in vocational high school.
“A steady rise”
We have gone from “600 to 3,200 apprentices in five years”, indicates the rectorate of Toulouse. And a 30% increase in staff in just three years.
“These numbers have been steadily increasing year after year since the implementation of the law for the freedom to choose one’s professional future”, we explain. Of nearly 13,000 young people who choose apprenticeship in the academy, 18.7% of them study in an engineering school, 11.6% in a license, 19.3% are in BTS and 18.2% a successful vocational baccalaureate.
A specific “apprentice pack”
Finally, 32.1% of apprentices follow CFA training. In total, the academy has 21,150 apprentices. To support new students, the Toulouse Academy has set up an “apprentice pack” including “a contract, a permit, accommodation”. For the driving license, the apprentice can be compensated up to 1,200 euros.
In Haute-Garonne, more than 7,000 high school students (out of more than 38,000 in general high school) have chosen a vocational stream this year. There are 5,120 in pro-public high schools and 2,135 in the private sector.
“Our roadmap is to reform the professional high school by giving more autonomy,” said Minister Delegate for Education and Vocational Training Carole Grandjean recently. The objectives are a better integration into employment towards the sectors which recruit and to facilitate the pursuit of studies”.
