Pilgrimages in autumn: three routes in Austria
Pilgrims have a centuries-old culture all over Europe and prove that people have not only developed the need for deceleration in recent years. Walking the pilgrimage routes means overcoming oneself, reflecting and only having the path as a goal in front of one. You don’t have to go to Spain or Italy for that. There are also pilgrimage routes in Austria – not dedicated to all Christian saints, but also to nature.
Granite pilgrims in the Mühlviertel
Walking on granite – this is a different approach to the indestructible rock. And it’s almost impossible to avoid in the Upper Mühlviertel. Especially not when hiking, and the charm of the rough landscape is revealed here, near the Czech border, on granite pilgrims. Ten communities between St. Martin im Mühlkreis and Helfenberg are connected over a hundred kilometers by a circular hiking trail with many power spots.
That nothing happens up here is a prejudice. With rolling hills, quiet streets and babbling brooks, as well as four pilgrimage churches, ten churches and more than a hundred “Marterln” there is plenty of opportunity for breather and contemplative thoughts. Stage destinations can be planned according to your own wishes, several companies offer granite pilgrims all-inclusive offers and also bring their guests to their desired stations and pick them up again.
