Toulouse Academy: the hassle of contract teachers with little or no training
Of more than a thousand contract teachers recruited at the start of the school year by the Toulouse academy, many have undergone specific “destabilizing” training for the unions.
Risky job. Of 160 teachers hired as contract teachers in schools in Haute-Garonne, especially in Toulouse, “None of them improved from training and out of 160, some did not start on the first day of the new school year” , explains Charlotte Andrieu, co-secretary of Snuipp-FSU 31.
The motto of the Minister of National Education and Youth Pap Ndiaye, visiting Toulouse last week, “a teacher in front of each class” has generally been respected. But at what cost?
“Do not panic the parents of students”
“For the teachers who arrive and for the teaching teams, it is destabilizing, continues Charlotte Andrieu. It’s a lot of instability and sometimes several job changes during the year. »
In order not to “freak out” the parents of students, Snuipp confides that “the instruction is not to spread the word at school that the teacher is contractual”. Once the contracts are in place, according to Charlotte Andrieu, the question arises of their replacement, if necessary.
“We already have constituencies that will be in deficit, especially in schools north of Toulouse, she adds. We feel tensions and the inspectorate will have to draw from the neighbors and it will be necessary, again, to hire contract workers”.
The rectorate is constantly recruiting
“The rectorate recruits contract workers every year over time, assures the academic secretary of the Snes-FSU (second degree) Pierre Priouret. When they arrive at college or high school, colleagues welcome them, help them a little, but we are not trainers”.
In the second degree, recalls the majority union, the training is two days for a contract worker.
“We had offered at least three days, but that was refused by the institution, continues Pierre Priouret. Two days to scan the functioning of the establishment and a module to consult on the internet, but nothing on pedagogy. I am not sure that the rectorate accepts that the candidates have read the module on the internet. At least they have a recruiter protocol in place. We still consider that a full professor becomes truly operational after seven years of teaching. »
4,000 unfilled positions in France

A four-day course…
The training before being screened in front of more than twenty-five children? In theory, candidates who wish to become contract workers, who must have a license 3 and a clean criminal record, pass an interview. If they are admitted, they can benefit from an express training of four days, before the start of the school year, in the best of cases. A revolution when you know the difficulty of obtaining the school teaching competition, followed by a year of full training.
First two days to examine the functioning of the school, relations with the parents of students and the director of the establishment. They will also learn what a call book or correspondence book is. Finally, another two-day module devoted to the preparation of the fundamental courses. Then it’s the big leap into the classroom, synonymous with on-the-job training.
