Google Maps launches fuel-saving routes in Belgium
Motorists using Google Maps to plan their route will soon be offered an alternative”slower in some cases but better for the environment and for their wallet“.
In the coming weeks, the American Internet giant will indeed deploy the function of “ecological route planning“In different countries, including Belgium, he announced on Wednesday. In the United States, Canada and Germany, this functionality has already existed for some time.
Google Maps calculates, based on various parameters – road type, speed, traffic density – whether a slower route is a greener alternative. The app will then indicate how long the car should be driven and how much fuel this will save.
A suitable calculation
The calculation depends on the type of engine (petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric) and the route may therefore differ depending on the engine. For example, a diesel car is more efficient at higher speeds, while a hybrid is more efficient in stopped traffic, according to Google.
Those who always want to take the fastest route can disable this feature.
The American company did not suggest any other indication if it would also introduce this technology in its navigation application, Waze.
