a difficult start to the season — Alsa’Sports
The Mercato market is coming to an end and Ligue 1 matches have resumed for a few weeks with numerous team changes which have redistributed the cards. One of the teams that seems to have suffered the most is Monaco who have started the season in a disappointing way for the fans.
As you follow the football to place sports betting or simply, because you are passionate about football, let us tell you more about Monaco’s start to the season and if the team will raise their heads.
A lackluster season opener
The 2022-23 Ligue 1 season had started quietly for the Monegasques after a 2-1 victory against Strasbourg. However, it seems that the Champions League qualifying game they lost to PSV Eindhoven 3-2 had an influence on what happened next.
Indeed, after this defeat, the club conceded a draw against the Rennes team, then suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat against Lens. Although the season has just started, these games contrast when you consider that the team was third in the standings last season.
Monaco finally raises its head?
If the first matches left a bitter taste for the supporters, Monaco managed to stand up to PSG, resulting in a tense draw and which nevertheless offered a good game for both sides.
A short-lived hope when Troyes beat them 4-1 a few days later, but it’s a result that can be partly explained by the battle against the Parisians.
During the meeting with Nice, the Monegasques snatched a narrow victory by scoring a single goal. According to Philippe Clement, the Monaco coach, the team can still do better and this is only the start of a strategy that has yet to bear fruit. This match also caused debate among the fans because of the absence of star player Wissam Ben Yedder on the lawn. The coach tried to reassure that he was letting him rest to get the best out of his game and we can only hope that’s true.
The rest of the season for Monaco
Monaco and their coach still have a lot of work ahead of them to move up the Ligue 1 standings and they are starting to fall significantly behind. However, if Clément’s new 3-4-3 strategy pays off, all is not lost for Monaco.
