Speech Máxima: The Netherlands must remain an example in LGBT emancipation
The Netherlands must continue to play an important role in LGBT emancipation. Queen Máxima pleaded Wednesday during a visit to the queer neighborhood of Castro in San Francisco. She noted this on the first day of her working visit to the United States.
The Queen paid a visit to the GLBT Historical Society Museum, where the history of American LGBTI people is involved. Máxima spoke with representatives of the LGBTI community in San Francisco. In the museum she looked at, among other things, a suit from Harvey Milk, the first openly gay driver in the US. The supervisor, who is regarded as an icon for the rainbow community, was murdered in San Francisco City Hall in 1978. The also received a photo of the very first queen flags.
Mayor London Breed of San Francisco explicitly praised the pioneering role that the Netherlands played in the past in LGBT emancipation. She referred to the fact that the very first same-sex marriages in the world were performed in Amsterdam in April 2001. Continues to play an important role in LGBT emancipation: “We must set an example for equal rights.
