Giorgia Meloni defended Poland and Hungary against the left
Giorgia Meloni, the president of the right-wing Italian Brothers (FdI), demanded an apology from the secretary-general of the left-wing Democratic Party (PD), Enrico Letta, on Italian public television on Tuesday evening, after Letta called Poland and Hungary second-class European states.
Giorgia Meloni called Enrico Letta’s statements “very serious”.
On Sunday, the PD General Secretary said at the economic forum held in Cernobbio, northern Italy, that with the left in Italy, he will remain in the first division of Europe next to France and Germany, then the possible election victory of the right will lead the country to Serie B (this is the name of the second division of football) , alongside the likes of Poland and Hungary.
Enrico Letta repeated the same thing on Tuesday at the PD’s campaign event in Rome.
“We cannot allow our country to follow the path of Hungary and Poland, we will not allow it,” declared Letta. He added that he has great respect and friendship for the Hungarian and Polish people, but “we don’t say anything about Matteo Salvini, who cites the family policy of the Orbán government as an example.”
Giorgia Meloni believed that Letta proved that he envisions Europe as a privileged club. “In the case of the attack on Poland, Enrico Letta does not take into account that it is a country that is seriously committed to Russia, and Letta’s statements say that he is not interested at all,” asserted Giorgia Meloni.
He added: Enrico Letta should apologize.
He noted that the program of the left is about nothing but the attack on Giorgia Meloni and the right: “if I stop politicking, they won’t have a program at all,” he said.
The president of the Italian Brothers appears in the popular political program Porta a Porta on RAI1, the details of which were announced before the broadcast. The political interviews before the September 25th parliamentary elections were started with Giorgia Meloni, as the FdI is in first place in the current surveys, close to twenty-five percent.
Giorgia Meloni said: if the voters support the FdI to the extent that the forecasts show, “I will lead the country”.
The leader of the right-wing party touched on a number of campaign topics, above all he spoke about the difficulties created by the energy crisis and inflation for families and businesses. “Utility bills are the first government point,” said Meloni.
He explained that his possible government is planning immediate budgetary measures, and they can provide help until spring. He touched on the issue of migration, saying he had come under a number of attacks after calling for a shipping blockade between the coasts of North Africa and Italy.
“If you don’t like it, you don’t have to call it a ship blockade, call it what you want, but Europe should launch a mission, negotiate with Libya with convincing arguments, and stop the departures, as well as mandatory registration centers there (in Libya) to decide who has the right to request asylum” in Europe – said Giorgia Meloni.
He announced that his nationwide campaign will become even more intense from Wednesday, the city of L’Aquila, which was hit by the earthquake, will also affect the traditional left-wing stronghold of Florence, and on Sunday the FdI will hold a rally in Milan’s Duomo square. The Italian Brothers and their allies, i.e. the League led by Matteo Salvini and chaired by Silvio Berlusconi, Hajrá, Italy (FI) on September 22 in Rome will close one of the largest electoral campaigns.
Enrico Letta, head of the left-wing alliance, held the first street campaign event on Tuesday. The general secretary of the PD stated that Italians will have to choose between the left and the right on September 25. “Those who don’t vote for the PD choose Meloni, Salvini, Berlusconi,” said Letta. Enrico Berlinguer, former general secretary of the predecessor party, the former Italian Communist Party (PCI), was quoted as saying that the left will fight for votes “from street to street, from house to house”.
He declared: the left has 17 days left to reject the victory of the right. He reminded that according to the current electoral system, a 46 percent victory for the Italian right-wing coalition is enough to obtain seventy percent of the parliamentary mandates.
In recent surveys, the alliance of the Italian Brothers, the League and Hajrá is measured by 46 percent of Italy.
