Residence visas for new immigrants in Portugal exceeded in the first semester or total of 2021 – Society
The number of new immigrants in Portugal exceeded the total for 2021 in the first half of the year, with around 133,000 new residence permits being granted, according to the Foreigners and Borders Service.
Data released to Lusa SEF show that 22,000 more new residence visas were granted in the first six months of the year than in the 12 months of 2021, when 11.31 were granted.

According to the SEF, of the 133,000 new residence permits, 48,000 were granted to Brazilians (more than a third), who are the largest resident community in the country.
In total, more than 250,000 Brazilians live in the country.
Among the new residence permits are the temporary protections granted to Ukrainians who fled the war, having been granted by the end of June 46,000, according to the SEF.
Ukrainians are now the second largest community living in Portugal, with around 73,000, having surpassed UK citizens, which in 2021 totaled 41,932.
The foreign population residing in Portugal exceeds 800,000 people.
