PICTURES. The Principality celebrates the 78th anniversary of the Liberation of Monaco
On September 3, 1944, American troops and the French Forces of the Interior liberated Monaco. The Principality continues to celebrate the event.
Back to this historic event. Between August 15 and September 3, 1944, the allies fought in Provence, bombarding the coasts to face the Gestapo. Monaco, but also Beausoleil, are regularly affected by these bombardments which cause dozens of victims. On the night of September 2, a final battle raged on the heights of La Turbie. The German soldiers are driven to defeat and on the awakening of September 3, 1944, they desert the streets of Monaco and Beausoleil.
The Americans had to wait a day before being authorized to enter the Principality. After four years of occupation, the population has duly indicated their arrival. In the columns of Monaco-morningDoctor Jean-Jo Pastor, a teenager at the time of the events, says that ” It lasted maybe a month! There were musette balls every evening with the accordion. »

78 years later, Monaco continues to celebrate La Liberation. A commemoration was held on the Place du Palais this Saturday, in the presence of the President and Vice-President of the National Council, Stéphane Valeri and Brigitte Boccone-Pagès.
Before laying a wreath in front of the Maison de France, Stéphane Valeri recalled the importance of the duty of memory. The President of the National Council had a special word for the resistance fighters arrested in Monaco and shot in 1944: “ René Borghini, Esther Poggio, Joseph Lajoux and all your martyred brothers and sisters of the Resistance, we remember today your sacrifice in the service of our freedom. And we will never forget you. »
