Greenhouse gas emissions at a historic low in Monaco
Good news for the planet. The Principality’s greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 31.8% compared to 1990. While some sectors, such as mobility or waste incineration, are good students, the construction sector still has progress to be made.
The Department of the Environment has published the Principality’s 2022 National Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Report. Result: in 2020, greenhouse gas emissions fell by 31.8% compared to 1990 in Monaco.
They reached “a historically low level”, welcomes the Government. A great progress when we know that the reduction in emissions in 2019 was only 18.8%.
Sector by sector
Top of the class are building energy demand, mobility and waste incineration. These sectors have respectively seen their emissions reduced by 21%, 17% and 19% between 2019 and 2020.
Only one area has seen an increase: construction. This is explained by the colossal construction sites in progress on the territory and in particular that of extension on the sea.
Objective –55% by 2030
This National Inventory Report closes the second period of the Kyoto Protocol (2013-2020) under which the Principality has undertaken to reduce its emissions by 30% in 2020. The objective has therefore been achieved.
Next step, the reduction of 55% of its gases by 2030 and carbon neutrality in 2050.
The Executive promises to continue its exemplary approach in terms of energy transition and ensures that it is ” used “.
