The penalties fall
This Friday, September 2, the UEFA sanctions concerning financial fair play fell. In a UEFA press release, the major football body has revealed the names of the clubs sanctioned for having exceeded the authorized €30m deficit. 8 clubs are concerned including 3 French. AC Milan, AS Monaco, AS Rome, Besiktas, Inter Milan, Juventus Turin, Olympique de Marseille and finally PSG. These clubs will have three years to get into the nails of financial fair play. For now, clubs are required to pay immediate and suspended fines. Suspended fines will have to be repaid gradually over the next three years. Under penalty of which, much heavier sanctions will be imposed on the clubs concerned.
“The club cannot register more than 23 players on its A list compared to the maximum of 25 players provided for in the competition regulations”. The last penalty that could be imposed on clubs is very dissuasive. Indeed, clubs could simply be excluded from the next UEFA club competition. This sanction applies under conditions during the 2024/2025 and/or 2025/2026 season.
Big fine for PSG
In total, the 8 clubs must pay €172 million to meet the requirements of financial fair play. PSG is the most heavily sanctioned club of the teams concerned. Thus, Paris Saint-Germain will have to pay €10m immediately and €55m over 3 years. OM and Monaco are doing well with fines of €300,000 immediately and €1.7m suspended.
Regarding the other sanctioned clubs, Besiktas receives an immediate fine of €600,000, AC Milan 2 million, Juventus 3.5 million, Inter Milan 4 million and AS Roma million. The majority of clubs have accepted a three-year recovery plan, with the exception of AS Roma and Inter Milan. The two clubs have opted for a 4-year plan, but also the restriction of not being able to register new players for European competitions until 2024.
