Russia is a bad country, you are influenced by propaganda, a Russian told Slovaks at a protest in Bratislava
A few days ago, a young Russian embarked on a brave but premeditated action in Bratislava, where pro-Russian conspiracy fans from the Civic Tribunal group were protesting. In the video, which was also taken over by the Slovak police, the young man explains to those present that Russia is a bad country and that the president, Vladimir Putin, is a dictator. However, the participants did not believe him and repeated many times refuted frauds.
“I am Russian and I have a completely opposite opinion,” says the young man to the demonstrators, who are on the side of Russia in the current war. “Are you for Ukraine?” the man who is apparently the author of the video asks him immediately.
“Russia is a bad country”
“Yes, I am for Ukraine, Russia invaded it, Russia is a bad country, simply a fascist regime,” the Russian continues in Slovak, to which another participant in the meeting asks him where he was taught that. The young man answers him that in Russia. Therefore, the visiting Slovak challenges him to prove that he is really Russian.
The young man has no problem with that either. “Subjective is enough,” continues the Slovak without explaining what I mean by that. “You know, anyone could say that they are Russian. OK, it’s your opinion, we respect it,” I add.
At that moment, however, the other people present, who do not have so much understanding, start to attack the young man. “Nazism suits you?” someone asks about the reasons why Russians support Ukraine. Is he perhaps on the side of the banders? “No, I am for a free Ukraine,” the foreigner does not give up the debate.
“Even the Russians are in favor of a free Ukraine, but America is in charge there,” is heard from the opposite camp, and one day he also comes up with popular misinformation. “And the labs and all that, what was that?” says one of the men, referring to the oft-debunked hoax about secret Ukrainian labs and human experiments. “These are fams,” the Russian youth explains.
However, the demonstrators still do not believe it. “I spent my whole life in Russia and it’s a bad country,” he continues, adding that he is thirty years old. The debate then turns on Slovakia as well, when the Russian remarks that it is a good country. “It turned out badly in Russia. Putin is a dictator,” he also says.
Attacks on the president
At that moment, the conversation takes on absurd proportions. “And what is Čaputová in Slovakia? President?” wonders a fan of the pro-Russian group Občiansky Tribunal. It is very small in number, but all the more significant. Its members, for example, protested against government measures during the covid era, and attacks against President Zuzana Čaputová are among their favorite activities.
They consider her a puppet and an American agent. Rus’s argument that Čaputová was elected to her position caused merriment among those present. “You are influenced by Russian propaganda,” their opponent later declares when he learns that the protesters have “common sense and facts.” “No,” answers the Russian curtly.
The video has been circulating on social networks in recent days and was also taken over by the Slovak police. “Sometimes there can be sad-funny situations when people influenced by misinformation will not even believe citizens of the Russian Federation, despite the fact that they have never been to this country,” the police wrote on Facebook.
He also reminds that the Slovaks belong to the worst countries in the European Union in terms of the number of disinformation believers receive. Only 51 percent of respondents in a recent survey by the Slovak company Globsec believed that Russia was responsible for the war in Ukraine. Among Czech survey participants, 78 percent of respondents shared this opinion.
“In Slovakia, a quarter of the people succumbed to Kremlin propaganda, and we consider the war in Ukraine to be a war for which the West is responsible,” said Globsec president Róbert Vass.
