Toulouse. Back-to-school cycles at the Cinémathèque –
One of the back-to-school events will undoubtedly be the presentation of the restoration of Fernando Arrabal’s film, Viva la muerte! This cult film, long censored and almost invisible, was restored by the teams of the Cinémathèque de Toulouse and screened at the last Cannes Film Festival as part of Cannes Classics.
The opportunity to come back with Arrabal on the history of the film, its shooting and the adventure of its restoration which will have marked the history of our institution. It is indeed the first restoration image of a heritage film entirely produced by the Cinémathèque.
Long ago, in an editing room far, far away… In this impassioned book just published by Carlotta Films and Almano Films, Paul Hirsch looks back on his career and talks to us about the art of editing. In partnership with the Festival 2 Cinéma de Valenciennes, Carlotta Films, Almano Films, ENSAV and the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès, the cinematheque will receive this great editing artist as part of an exceptional French tour. In partnership with the 27th edition of Cinespaña, the cinematheque invites you this year to dive into Spanish detective cinema. Rodrigo Sorogoyen, who renewed the genre in a few films, will introduce us to what is called “Black Spanish”.
With the festival, as part of the France-Portugal Season 2022, João Pedro Rodrigues, one of the most exciting and award-winning contemporary Portuguese filmmakers, will be invited.
Thirty partner structures, two hundred international artists, La Biennale – International Festival of Living Arts Toulouse Occitanie is back for a second edition. The Cinémathèque is part of the adventure this time. For more than a year, within the framework of a partnership bringing together the Cinémathèque, Le Vent des Signes, RING – peripheral scene and Maison Salvan, Moroccan multidisciplinary artist Abdessamad El Montassir has been in residence. It will present, in the four places, Memories of the ashes, a set of sound, film and visual works that rethinks history and questions the influence of trauma on individuals.
Finally, the back-to-school exhibition will feature the magazine Positif, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary. After more than 700 issues, we will come back with the critic NT Binh on what makes the “positive spirit” and on this critical adventure which has stirred, nourished and marked cinema so much.
