Toulouse. A place for Mexican food lovers
El Zócalo (central square of Mexico City) is the name of the street food restaurant (formerly El Rey) established for a year in the heart of the Saint-Georges district in Toulouse.
A change of name intended to give a more Mexican identity to this place which offers a new look, with a large room open to the kitchen and toilets, to allow consumption on the spot.
“We also reviewed the decor to make it a place that resembles us, a friendly place where we like to be in the center of a city or a village”, explains Maria the co-manager. Of Brazilian origin, Maria worked for a long time in a large sushi chain, and was seduced when Ahmed, the owner, presented her with this new project.
“What I liked was finding my roots and a bit of the warmth of my continent,” she says. El Zócalo is the only street food in the city center presenting a full range of Mexican specialties. A cuisine revisited in the form of fast food but composed only of fresh and healthy products. On the menu as well as on the menu, empanadas, quesadillas, Mexican bowl, burritos, nachos to share on the spot, or even, best-sellers, the real Mexican tacos (folded corn cake topped with meat or shrimp). Everything is homemade right down to the guacamole! A quality which, thanks to word-of-mouth, is attracting an increasingly numerous neighborhood clientele, but also English, German, Spanish or Portuguese tourists, welcomed by a young, dynamic and multilingual team.
