on aid to Ukraine: We will never become a party to war
the path destroyed the agreements that have been in place in Europe for many decades, that never again will borders be changed by force, and Russia is not going to stop at Ukraine.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said this during the next “Dialogue with Citizens”, reported the correspondent of Ukrinform.
“Putin’s announcements: I want something from my neighbors. And this is something that should concern us all, because it is not limited to Ukraine,” the chancellor said. He blamed his mention of a meeting with Putin in Moscow, “at a long table”, numerous telephone conversations with him, during which the Russian president made it clear “what he will do in the future”.
The chancellor noted that the path interprets history textbooks in its own way, holding the opinion that Ukraine and Belarus belong to his country, the last peoples of this state “speak like Russians.”
“But it’s terrible! Think about it: we all look in our history books and find out that someone somewhere speaks a similar language. Or let’s look in the history textbooks and start asking ourselves, where did our own borders pass before? This is how we will fight around the world for another 300 years… That is why it is so important to say: we cannot accept it when borders are tried to be changed by force… Who will guarantee us that if it succeeds once, it will not happen again?”, he said. Scholz.
That is why, after receiving it, Germany departed from the policy of the past decades and decided to support Ukraine not only with money and humanitarian aid, but also with weapons. If this was not done, the consequences, according to the policy, “would be terrible.” But, the German leader noted, in matters of providing weapons, he always looked at what the partners were creating. Scholz repeated what he has said many times: he sees his duty as chancellor to act in coordination with allies. This means that they will not supply weapons that Ukraine could use to strike the territory of Russia.
“It is about the defense of Ukraine, and this is what we are doing… In this way, we hope that we can guarantee that the war will not escalate. We care very much about supporting (Ukraine – ed.), but it will never come to a war between Russia and NATO… We said that we will never become a party to war,” Scholz emphasized, adding that we must act decisively. but at the same time carefully, always weighing what is right and what is not.
The chancellor also spoke in support of arms control, because no one in their right mind wants a permanent stockpile of missiles. However, he added, in this situation there is no need to talk about reducing arms. “But it remains a goal,” he assured. Scholz added that the current task is to make Germany and NATO “so strong that no one can attack them.”
this time Scholz’s dialogue with citizens took place in the city of Essen. It, like the previous one, lasted 90 minutes.
