Groundbreaking ceremony for the new construction of the Balzner village square – Liechtenstein
BALZERS – On Thursday morning, the groundbreaking ceremony for the village square with underground car park of the municipality of Balzers took place. This marks the official starting signal for the design of the new center and meeting place.
As part of the “Balzers Mitte” project, various ideas were developed with the involvement of the population. A central concern of “Balzers Mitte” was the realization of a village square in the center of Balzers, still the community in its mission. A design competition was announced and the winner was announced in July 2019. According to the community, it was important for the village square to have a high-quality design and operational optimization, as well as a convincing urban planning concept. The winning project by the Vogt Landscape Architects AG, Zurich/BBK Architekten AG, Balzers/ARGE: Baenziger Partner AG, St. Gallen & STW AG for rough planning, Chur team was the best at implementing the difficult task. The winning project “ORDO” was revised and specified.
After the population approved the project in November 2020, the municipality received the building permit for the village square in April 2022 and the preparatory work could begin. Existing plant lines were relocated and various electrical installations had to be put into operation. In addition, a temporary parking lot and an installation and storage area were created.
The newly designed village square should become an attractive meeting place for the residents, according to the idea of the municipality. It should offer space for open-air events, but also a large marquee between the approx. 60 newly planted trees. Around 100 parking spaces will be available in the planned underground car park. The village square is to be handed over to the population of the municipality of Balzers in the summer of 2024.
