Avignon: favorable opinion to improve the protection dykes of the Piot and Barthelasse islands
The public inquiry commission received a favorable opinion considering ” that the work project to improve the protection of the Piot and Barthelasse islands against Rhone floods is of general interest and must be the subject of a declaration of public utility “. let’s remember that Greater Avignon carries a €17.8 million project which should start in 2023 to better protect the Barthelasse Islands (600 hectares, 2,200 inhabitants) and Piot (81.7 hectares) from flooding. The largest project concerns the Barthelasse dyke on the Avignon arm side, with a budget of €11.8 million. Two years of work will be necessary for the complete restoration of the banks and the planting of trees over 6,565 linear metres. This part includes the creation of a new land dyke of a length of 820 meters set back from the existing shore which will be preserved.

In addition to these works, there is the construction of a grassy merlon one meter high by 108 meters and drainage ditches near the leisure center, the elevation of 50 cm of the Chemin de la Traille which crosses the isthmus, the reshaping of his ditch, the removal and replanting of a hedge. The program also provides for the construction of a concrete flood wall from 30 cm to 50 cm over 584 meters on the arm of Villeneuve on the island of Barthelasse. On the right bank of the Avignon arm, on the embankment of the heavily recovered Dr. Pons tourist route, the project intends to remove the bottleneck on the river caused by the part of this structure called the Quai des Allemands. The intervention provides for a setback of 24 meters from the edge of the river on a linear of 300 m2.
