Saint-Joseph Chapel (Hospice de la Grave) Place Lange, 31300 Toulouse, France Saint-Cyprien Toulouse Haute-Garonne Occitanie
HistoryLocated on the left bank of the Garonne, in the Saint-Cyprien district, the hospital occupies a vast area between the old ramparts and the Garonne. The dome of the chapel overlooks the river from its height of 85m and forms an emblematic landmark of the urban landscape. La Grave hospital was built in the 12th century on the shore of the Garonne, from which it takes its name. First of all, it welcomes the plague-stricken, in particular because of its extra-mural situation, ideal for isolating the contagious, then the poor, orphans, prostitutes for the treated and instructing them. Easily identifiable, its circular chapel, finished at the 19th century, has a lantern dome supported by a wooden structure and covered with copper. With a centered plan, it opens with a forepart with Doric pilasters supporting an entablature and a pediment, the elongated stone of which has never received any sculpture. With eight hectares, mainly laid out in the 17th and 18th centuries, La Grave forms the largest hospital in the city organized around several courtyards. The main maternity hospital for Toulouse residents during the 20th century, the site no longer receives hospitalized patients but accepts local social medicine.Restoration projectA cultural and landscape project aimed at enabling Toulouse residents to truly reclaim this space. de la Grave is part of the public domain of Toulouse University Hospital.
