The head of the US sanctions office arrived in Bulgaria
The head of the Office for Coordination of Sanctions in the US State Department, Jim O’Brien, arrived in Sofia on Tuesday evening. He meets with the President of Bulgaria Rumen Radev.
“A strong economy, a prosperous society and free media can only be built on the rule of law, and this requires that the fight against corruption is not subject to political or other considerations,” Radev said at the meeting, the head of state’s press office reported.
The President has assessed the high level of support that civil society in our country will receive under the global “Magnitsky” law and emphasizes the need for real political will to reform the justice system. Such a reform will create a qualitatively new business environment in Bulgaria, conditions for the attraction of strategic investments and, above all, will strengthen statehood, Rumen Radev pointed out.
The Bulgarian society expects from the prosecutor’s office specific actions on the submitted by the caretaker governments in the year a number of signals of committed in the administration, which is a mandatory condition for the return of trust in state violations, the president also emphasized.
The holding of fair parliamentary elections, the development of the legislative framework necessary for the implementation of the Recovery and Sustainability Plan, the process of Bulgaria’s accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and Schengen, as well as diversification, are also among the highlights of the meeting.
Ambassador O’Brien will hold meetings with representatives of the Bulgarian government and with members of the international business community, the US Embassy in Bulgaria announced. With them, he will discuss topics related to highlighting the transparent and favorable business environment, supporting foreign direct investment and strengthening the rule of law, the US mission added.
