The Netherlands must reduce CO2 emissions much further
The Netherlands will reduce emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide much further than the cabinet currently intends, the research agency NewClimate Institute has found. That has analyzed the policy and concludes that current plans are not to reduce the nature of the earth to 1.5 degrees. The research is being carried out on behalf of Greenpeace, Milieudefensie and Natuur & Milieu. These organizations also want the Netherlands to take stricter measures.
Just like other European countries, the government wants emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) to be about 55 percent lower in 2030 than in 1990. By 2050, the Netherlands and the countries should be climate neutral. Climate neutral does not mean that a country no longer pollutes, but that the pollution that is still there is compensated for in other places. That would curb the need, but the researchers “conclude that both of these goals fall short.”
Carbon dioxide emissions should be reduced proportionately to help conserve the climate. The conclusion: “Total greenhouse gas emissions should be 94 percent by 2030, ten compared to 1990.” Much more than the agreed 55 percent.
In the Climate Agreement the situation of the earth may be too well below 2 degrees Celsius, and thus 1.5 degrees.
