Almost a whole family in the Icelandair crew
“It was no different than any other flight. Everyone did their job and everything went professionally. There was nothing very family-like about the flight itself.”
This is what Ingvar Mar Jónsson, an Icelandair pilot who recently went to Washington DC in the state, together with his wife and daughters, says in an interview with mbl.is.
With Ingvar in the crew was his wife, Sigríður Nanna Jónsdóttir, and their daughters, Nína Björg Ottósdóttir, Ingibjörg Ingvarsdóttir and Sigríður Marta Ingvarsdóttir. They all work as flight attendants.
Along with the family, there was one other pilot and flight attendant in the crew.
Lovely to be with the family
According to Ingvar, they all asked to be put on this particular flight to Washington. Neither Ingibjörg nor Sigríður Marta got the flight, but they managed to switch shifts with flight attendants who were supposed to be on it.
After it became clear that they would all be flying together, the family invited Sigríðar Nanna’s mother and the spouses Ingibjargar and Sigríðar Marta along for the flight.
“We stopped for 24 hours in Washington, and of course it was wonderful to be with the family, but at work it was like any other flight,” says Ingvar.
Meet at Icelandair
Ingvar and Sigríður Nanna met through their jobs at Icelandair, but Ingvar started working in 1996 and Sigríður Nanna a year later.
Sigríður Nanna comes from a large aviation family, but her father, Jón Karl Snorrason, and grandfather, Snorri Snorrason, both worked as flight controllers at Icelandair. Sigríðar Nanna’s great-uncle was Jóhannes Snorrason, who worked as a flight controller at Icelandair for decades.
Now her brother, Snorri Bjarnvin Jónsson, works as a flight controller at Icelandair and his wife, Erla Kristinsdóttir, as a flight attendant. Sigríðar Nanna’s sister, Þórhildur Jónsdóttir, is also a flight attendant.
Interest was sparked early
According to Ingvar, their daughters Sigríðar Nanna’s dream of being a flight attendant started when they were young.
“They all want to at least try it. They found it so exciting when we came home from the USA with some stuff, but then they often went out with us as kids. That’s how the interest was sparked.”
Nína Björg started working at Icelandair in 2015 and is doing her job with a cosmetology course. Ingibjörg and Sigríður Marta took a summer job at the airline this summer.
Ingvar that Sigríði Márta, who is studying pedagogy and education at the University of Iceland, is interested in returning to the flight attendant job after completing his studies, but he thinks it is likely that Ingibjörg, who is studying law at the University of Reykjavík, will stop working as a flight attendant after the summer .
The couple also have a seventeen-year-old son. According to Ingvar, he is still undecided about what he will do in the future. However, he is not as interested in the aviation sector as his sister.
