Squat evacuated in Toulouse: “It’s good news for the Republic”, says Mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc
Jean-Luc Moudenc, mayor of Toulouse, president of Toulouse Métropole, reacted to The Midi Dispatch after the evacuation of the Lardenne district squat, this Friday, August 26, 2022.
The prefect implemented the eviction of the Tourelles ordered by the court, what comments, does that inspire you?
“Whenever the law of the Republic regains the upper hand over illegal situations, it is good news for society. This evacuation will allow us to implement a modernization project for this building to set up a major social project in favor of pregnant women or single mothers who are in a precarious situation. We already have the construction companies and we will start work without delay. Good news too, it seems that there is not too much damage inside. I am hopeful that this new reception center will be functional either at the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.
“The regrets, we have when we did not try to do something”
Didn’t you play with nitroglycerin by setting up this co-management project for Les Tourelles with migrant aid associations?
Not at all. We have regrets when we haven’t tried to do something. We have tackled a problem that is too difficult and which, basically, is beyond us.
Is there a risk, in your opinion, that the dismantling of the Tourelles squat will lead to an increase in migrants in Toulouse in the coming days?
How could I not be worried? If there was expulsion it is because there were refusals of authority. On a case with people who are in the violence including between them. My concern is more general and I spoke to the prefect about it, there have been evacuations in other districts. I told him that evictions are only effective if people are taken care of, or invited to leave the territory. I remind you that 80 to 90% of the obligations to leave the territory are not applied. »
