The whole of the Netherlands is concerned about the breakup Nick & Simon, on behalf of Volendam
In Volendam – unlike the rest of the Netherlands – little or no tears are shed because of the split between the singing duo Nick & Simon. “We are too sober for that. We are not interested. They make beautiful music and what they do privately, we have nothing to do with that,” says eel smoker Jan Smit.
“If you’ve been together for so many years and you sit around making music all day, then at a certain point you don’t feel like it anymore. That’s how it goes these days. You see that in every industry,” said one resident, earlier today on NH Radio.
“It’s not the talk of the town. We all know those guys, we don’t talk about them. It’s only in the tabloids that they get attention,” he continues.
A skipper in a long yellow raincoat is standing with his son on a ship in the Volendammer harbor. The news has reached him, but like his fellow villagers, he is not very interested. “If you break up, you break up. It’s that simple.” According to him, they are not concerned with water in rural areas in his village. “They’re not dead, are they? They go their separate ways, that’s fine.”
The skipper thinks the choice to go for advice in music is a good move. “If you can no longer ground yourself with each other, then you should stop. You should not continue against your will.”
“I’m Not Devastated”
It’s not entirely clear exactly why the two broke up. There are many rumors going around. Also in Volendam it is guesswork. “These remain Volendam’s secrets”, the skipper chuckles.
There were not many Nick & Simon fans in the village at the time. One resident explains: “It doesn’t devastate me, but they did their best. You haven’t heard them in recent years. They were just playing games on TV.”
