Europa League: AS Monaco will face Belgrade, Ferencvaros and Trabzonspor in the group stage
The draw for the group stage of the Europa League was carried out on Friday in Istanbul.
Two days before their trip to Paris in Ligue 1 (Sunday, 8:45 p.m.), Wissam Ben Yedder’s partners have learned of the European meetings that await them from September 8.
Placed in pot 2, the Monegasques knew they had a chance to inherit a big chunk from pot 1. Arsenal, Manchester United and AS Roma were all potential opponents.
The Principality club did rather well by avoiding these top names. Among the seeds, he fell on the Red Star of Belgrade. It will nevertheless be necessary to be wary of the champion of Serbia and its bubbling enclosure, the Rajko Mitic stadium nicknamed the Marakana. In December 2018, Paris Saint-Germain won in the Serbian capital, in the group stage of the Champions League (1-4).
The champions of Hungary (Ferencvaros) and Turkey (Trabzonspor) will be the other two opponents of the Red and Whites.
The match schedule will be known in the coming days. Before revealing it, UEFA must agree with the broadcasters. The first two days will be played on Thursday 8 and 15 September. The 3rd and 4th will be contested on Thursdays 6th and 13th October. The last two are scheduled for Thursday, October 27 and November 3. Due to the World Cup hosted by Qatar at the end of the year (November 20-December 18), this group stage has been condensed. It will end in November, whereas it generally ends a month later.
The first of each group will be directly qualified for the round of 16. The second will be forced to go through the play-offs and face the third of a Champions League group. Finally, the third will compete in the Europa League Conference play-offs.
