Toulouse: school canteen prices “do not increase” at the start of the school year, assure the town hall
The deputy mayor of Toulouse in charge of education announced, Wednesday, August 24, that the prices of the school canteen “will not increase” at the start of the school year.
With the increase in raw materials, in particular because of the war in Ukraine, the question of the prices applied to Toulouse families for school meals arose on Wednesday August 24, during the press conference in the presence of the mayor of Toulouse and president of the metropolis Jean-Luc Moudenc and his education assistant Marion Lalane de Laubadère.
35,000 meals per day
Good news for parents of students who benefit, for this start of the 2022 school year, from the 4% increase in the back-to-school allowance (ARS). But this freezing of school catering prices in Toulouse is far from having been generalized in the rest of France.
Remember that the central kitchen delivers nearly 35,000 meals every day to the 210 schools in Toulouse. The education assistant also recalled that “prices have not changed since 2015. The rise in commodity prices will be absorbed by the city”.
“We do not pass on the families”
Le Capitole has anticipated the debate that comes up with each return to school. “We face increases with our suppliers, but we do not pass them on to families,” reassured Jean-Luc Moudenc. The opportunity for elected officials to recall that “the town hall continues to invest in ever better meals”.
Fight against food waste
More organic and local products, assures the city which praises the performance of the central kitchen: “It has exceeded the obligations of the EGALIM law with 51.44% of the products which have a quality label, Label rouge, Bio, Bleu blanc heart…, explains the town hall. And 32% of products from organic farming and 43% of local products”.
Food waste remains a major concern for Toulouse, which has validated the dosage of trays for students. A kilo of waste costs three euros to the community.
