Double event in Florence dedicated to Eleonora di Toledo
On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Eleonora di Toledo, there are many events dedicated to the duquesa Leonora. On Saturday 27 August the Florentine Civic Museums and MUS.E, with the coordination of the World Heritage Office of the Municipality of Florence, organize two events, the first – in collaboration with the Fondo Edifici di Culto – Ministry of the Interior, Opera per Santa Maria Novella and Dominican Library – is a special visit to the Santa Maria Novella complex that allows you to rediscover places and works of art linked to the “Spanish Natione”, the second is the thematic visit Under the wings of a Lapwing at Palazzo Vecchio.
In the appointment in Santa Maria Novella, set at 15:30, we will go to the discovery of the places of the complex, including the Great Cloister and the Cappellone degli Spagnoli, the interventions of how significant the sixteenth century were on the entire complex, even online with the Counter-Reformation dictates. In 1566, the “Spanish Natione” “which in Florence in those times flourished beyond measure, for the number and for the illustrious quality of the people who were there” obtained the ancient Chapter House of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria Novella to celebrate the Its liturgical offices, renaming it Cappellone degli Spagnoli: the refined decoration of the apsidal scarsella dedicated to San Giacomo di Compostella and other Spanish saints and the rich sepulchral slabs of Spanish consuls testify to this. This name is still added to remember the strong link between Spain and Santa Maria Novella, certainly strengthened by the presence and will of the Duchess Eleonora de Toledo, who arrived in the city in 1539 with a large noble following. Surely the Hispanic origin of the Santo founder Domingo of Guzman will have contributed to attracting the munificent attention of many Spanish clients, first of all the sovereign, who by testamentary will also bequeaths the female convent “of the knights”, which will rise precisely next to the Dominican complex.
Also on Saturday 27 August (at 3 pm and 4.30 pm) the thematic visit Under the wings of a lapwing is scheduled at Palazzo Vecchio. The appointment will bring visitors to learn more about the Duchess’s events and characters and to appreciate the more limited artistic results connected to her, with attention to the apartments intended for her and to her special chapel, painted by one of her favorite artists, Agnolo Bronzino.
Visits are possible thanks to the support of Business Strategies and Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella.
